God from the Machine (deus ex machina) is a plot device in novels and plays where a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly resolved by an unexpected power or event.
As a Christian (and English teacher), I chose this title for my blog because I believe God appeared within this world as Jesus of Nazareth about 2,000 years ago and provided a resolution to an unsolvable problem. To be blunt, I believe Jesus is the only hope for this world.
I also chose this title because deus ex machina can also be seen negatively. Sometimes deus ex machina resolutions in novels and plays feel artificial. This is how many atheists and agnostics see Christianity: A manufactured solution to comfort us in an imperfect world.
As a former atheist, when I began following Jesus I decided I would be an informed Christian. I wanted to honestly look into all those questions and objections I had as an atheist. This started in 2005 and I am still finding good reasons to follow Jesus.
I hope to use this blog to address my friends who have honest questions and objections (and misconceptions) about Christianity — not in “debate” but in “conversation” as friends. I believe people can disagree with each other without slander, hostility, or passing judgment. I also pray that everything I post on this blog is written with humility, because I recognize I am imperfect, I am still learning, and I have not forgotten where I have come from.
“…but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.” (1 Peter 3:15-17)
